Original Student Songs

Over the course of their journey, students get a chance to write multiple original songs, including a blues song in Mississippi, a ballad in Nashville, and a socially conscious rap in LA. In addition to these personal songs, students get the opportunity to write and record an original song with their bands, working with a local musician and recording engineer in Long Beach. Each band gets 2 hours to come up with a song from scratch and record it on the spot! Here are the songs written & recorded by AMJ students from OFY San Bernardino and OFY San Juan!

What Students are Saying About AMJ

  • "This trip has really helped me step out of my comfort zone, first performing a song on the electric guitar, then recording my own song. Engaging in that was a lot different than what I'm used to ever doing, and I will be taking that with me."

    -Gabriela

  • "This trip has impacted me in many ways. I'm taking home cool and memorable experiences that have shaped my musical journey. I'm taking home new musical chords on the guitar. This trip has made me stronger emotionally by being able to express myself through songwriting and allowing myself to be vulnerable. I'm grateful for this trip and the joy its brought me and my peers."

    -Claire

  • "I'm taking home memories and stories I'll never forget, and valuable knowledge I can apply to my own life. I feel this trip has given me confidence to say that I am not only a writer, but a recording artist!"

    -Carmen

  • "I learned how to work in a team. I learned how to play new notes on the guitar. I discovered new music that is definitely going on my playlist. Something I've learned is to keep going and when I'm feeling overwhelmed, just to take a step back and just to live in the moment."

    -Randy
